MY TIDBITS:

Once again, Miami is showing the world that it moves to its own beat. While the majority of US cities remain weighted down by the effects of negative equity going into the fourth year of the recession, Miami has been soaring thanks to waves of cash flooding not only from its customary money pipeline, Latin America, but also from far, farther afield—Russia. The deluge of ruble-, bolívar-, peso-, and Brasilian real exchanged dollars has bailed out Miami’s real estate sector, crowded luxury label boutiques, recharged the restaurant scene, and is presently inspiring the best architects in the world to reshape the Miami skyline. Now, it is realigning the social and business sectors, too.
The newcomers are an amalgam of Latin one percenters—Brasilians, Venezuelans, Mexicans—mixed in with Russian oligarchs and “minigarchs.” Their arrival and impact justify the city’s nickname, the Magic City, as Miami has indeed pulled off another miraculous selfreinvention during the worst global economic turndown of the last 80 years.

So what has this meant for Miami? The stores and nightlife are humming. “It used to be the Russians walking out of Bal Harbour Shops with tons of bags, having dropped $50,000 per store,”  “The activity is [the same], but the language has changed to Portuguese.” You hear Portuguese wafting about hotel lobbies, the luxury label shops, and South Beach restaurants. While many Brasilians have and continue to scoop up condos and shorefront property, others come to town for a few days to stock up on luxury labels and the latest tech gadgets. “If you live in São Paulo and want to buy a handbag, it’s cheaper to buy a ticket to Miami, stay in a hotel, and purchase the bag in Bal Harbour,” But it’s not all about shopping, at least not in a strictly retail sense—Brasilians now lead the Latin charge at Art Basel Miami Beach, knowing full well the contemporary art circuit is the one to travel to access some of the city’s coolest power centers.

serendipity

Word Origin & History

serendipity
1754 (but rare before 20c.), coined by Horace Walpole (1717-92) in a letter to Mann (dated Jan. 28); he said he formed it from the Persian fairy tale "The Three Princes of Serendip," whose heroes "were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of."

1.
an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2.
good fortune; luck: the serendipity of getting the first job she applied for.

When scientists finally perfect artificial intelligence, our keyboards will be doomed. That’s because the Esc key will surely figure out that it’s not in its best interest to stay in the clicky input device. When that happens, we cannot quit programs just like that, so the world would be a lot stranger.

Que saudade!
The word saudade (sah-ooh-dah-jee) has no direct translation in English, and it's a major source of linguistic pride for Brasilians. Use Que saudade! (kee sah-ooh-dah-jee) when you miss something so desperately, you have a heartache over it. People say Que saudade! when they remember their best friend who's now living far away, or their childhood beach. Brasilians also often say simply Saudades! at the end of e-mails to tell you they're missing you terribly.

Fala sério!
Say Fala sério (fah-lah seh-dee-oh) to mean You're kidding! or You're joking! or No way! Brasilians also say Não acredito! (nah-ooh ah-kdeh-jee-toh; I can't believe it!) in the same situations. But Fala sério has a funnier tone to it. It literally means Talk seriously.

Lindo maravilhoso!

Lindo maravilhoso! (leen-doh mah-dah-veel-yoh-zoo) is a Brasilian saying that literally translates to Beautiful, marvelous! Brazilians like to gush about beauty and how amazing things are.

Fique tranquilo

If Brasilians value any single trait, it's optimism; it's being able to solve problems. And if the problem can't be fixed, just relax and forget about it. At the first signs of someone's stress, a Brasilian often says Fique tranquilo (fee-kee kdang-kwee-loh; Don't worry). It has a very calming effect.

Death
With his professional and personal lives in disarray and deeply in debt, Alexander shot himself in the head in the barn behind his home.
