On June 25, 2006, Hamas terrorists entered Israeli territory via an underground tunnel and attacked an IDF tank post, notoriously resulting in the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit.
In addition to Shalit’s abduction, two Israeli soldiers were killed and two were wounded in the attack. Two of the terrorists were killed as well.
Shalit remained in captivity for over five years, until he was released in 2011 in exchange for over 1,000 terrorists.
