Passover (Pesach) 

Originally a combination of a couple of different spring festivals, it is a commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt--especially the night when G-d "passed over" the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague--and of the following day, when the Israelites had to leave Egypt hurriedly. Centered on the family or communal celebration of the seder (ritual meal), Passover is one of the most beloved of all Jewish holidays.

If you've Googled something today, you've probably noticed some quirky artwork on their homepage—a cartoon homage to the Eiffel Tower's first-ever public opening in 1889! 

In honor of the Parisian landmark's big birthday, i've compiled a petit list of things you might not know about the world's most famous selfie backdrop...

1. Architect Gustave Eiffel also designed the Statue of Liberty's framework
2. An "artist's protest" of the building, signed by major literary and fine arts figures like Guy de Maupassant, ran in 1887. It called the proposed tower "a joke."
3. 300 workers built the tower.
4. When it opened to the public for the 1889 World's Fair, it boasted a state-of-the-art invention called an elevator, which many visitors rode for the first time.
5. At the very top of the tower, Thomas Edison presented a phonograph to Mr. Eiffel as a gift. He was one of the first people in Europe to own one.
6. The tower was supposed to be torn down by 1900, but because scientists could conduct meteorological experiments from the top, it stayed. Later, it was used to transmit radio signals, which it still does—along with TV signals—today.
7. During World War II, the French cut the elevator cables so the Nazis would have to climb all 1700 steps to reach the top. 
8. Bungy jumping is strictly prohibited on the Eiffel Tower, but several daredevils have done it anyway. The first one was Bungy inventor AJ Hackett, who jumped in 1987...and was promptly arrested on the ground by Paris police.
9. The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day and Kendrick Lamar have all name-dropped The Eiffel Tower in their lyrics.
10. The Eiffel Tower features prominently in Kenzo's spring collection; other designers who have used the motif include Chanel and Sonia Rykiel.
